Description/Objective:

 

     This course is an introduction to the characteristics (i.e. behavior disorders, retardation, physical and health impairments, communication disorders, hearing impairments, visual impairments, and the gifted and talented) of exceptional individuals and their educational needs.  Emphasis is placed on the learning styles and approaches to teaching the exceptional child on the secondary level, curriculum implications and classroom modifications, innovation and development, effective use of supportive assistance services, parental involvement, and the role of the general educator in dealing with mainstreamed students.

Instructional Format:

 

    Through lecture by teacher and prospective teachers, class discussion, field study, assigned research, and videos.

 

Requirements:

 

    1.  attend and participate in all class sessions

         students are encouraged to arrive on time and remain for the full class session

2.     read all assigned materials

3.     take quizzes and exams at scheduled times (students must obtain prior permission to take a makeup)

    4.  submit written assignments when due

    5.  participate in a field study assignment and submit a written

        report

ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE IN TYPEWRITTEN FORM

 

Grading:

 

Exams       75%

Presentation 25%

 

Exams will be multiple choice, true/false, and essay

As outlined in the student handbook

 

Attendance:

 

    Students are expected to attend all class sessions.  Three absences a semester are allowed.  A penalty of two points will be deducted from the final grade for each absence thereafter.

 

Extra Credit Assignments:

 

    No extra credit assignments will be accepted.  However, grades can be positively affected by worthwhile class contributions, regular attendance, and completion of homework.  Students are encouraged to contact the professor if they have any questions concerning their academic standing in the course.

 

Academic Dishonesty:

 

    Cheating or plagiarism will not be tolerated.  Students involved will receive a failing grade for the project.
