COURSE GOAL:
This is an introductory
course designed to familiarize the student with the “operations” aspect of a
police organization. Subjects covered
include line activities of law enforcement and security agencies with emphasis
on the patrol function and the prevention of crime; includes traffic,
investigative, vice, special operational units and training.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
̃ Discuss the foundations of police in America.
̃ Discuss the investigative
process from a uniformed patrol and a criminal investigation
division point of view.
̃ Discuss the reasons why and
how police agencies should attempt to make line officers
part of the management process.
̃ Describe the tasks of police
personnel management.
̃ Discuss the reasons why the
decision of whom to hire and the use of probationary periods
is so important to police administrators.
̃ Explain the aspects of
entrance standards and why they are necessary.
̃ Describe the screening and
selection process.
̃ Explain the aspects of
entry-level training, off-duty training, and external training.
̃ Describe the processes of
position classification and assignment, career development, and
performance
evaluation issues.
COURSE FORMAT:
The course will be presented
in a lecture - discussion - student class presentation format which will be
adjusted to meet subject and student needs.

GRADING:
In order to measure
understanding of the material covered in the text and class discussions, three
examinations will be conducted. The
student will also prepare a thirty minute presentation on a police or
corrections administrative area of their own choice. The student can gathered research material or
perform a visitation to an agency and observe the department operational
process. The final course grade will be
based on the following criteria:

NOTE - There are no "make-up" dates
without prior written approval. It is
your individual responsibility to plan your semester accordingly. Attendance, preparation, and active
participation is expected. The lectures
are designed to reinforce the concepts in your textbook that the instructor
feels to be of primary importance; hence the material tested will come mostly
from the lectures. The college policy on
academic dishonesty will be strictly enforced.
