TEXT

Blitzer, R. Thinking Mathematically 4th Edition. Pearson/Prentice Hall: Upper Saddle River, NJ, 2008.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to help students think effectively and analyze issues logically. Basic strategies of thought and analyses are emphasized. These strategies are designed to help students deal with real-life situations. Topics covered include: topology, set theory, logic, geometry and probability.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Use deductive and inductive reasoning
  2. Develop strategies to solve problems
  3. Use set notation and perform operations on sets
  4. Use the principles of logic
  5. Use formulas with geometric figures
  6. Compute probabilities

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

GRADING

Attendance/Homework: Homework will be checked off at the beginning of each class, before correcting it. This will serve as both a homework grade and an attendance check. Honest attempts at homework will be granted full credit. Half attempts will not be granted credit. It is in the students’ interest to complete assignments, as exams will be difficult at best if the attempt has not been made. Tardiness beyond homework’s checkoff point will not be granted credit for that class.

Exams: Exams will be given following the completion of each chapter. Exams may be a combination of math problems and word problems, or they may be solely word problems.

Final Exam: The final is comprehensive, and will be made up largely, but not necessarily solely, of word problems.

Supplies: Scientific calculator required (cell phone calculator not acceptable). Graphing calculator not necessary.

GRADING SYSTEM

A (94 - 100) A- (90 - 93) B+ (87 - 89) B (83 - 86) B- (80 - 82)
C+ (77 - 79) C (73 - 76) C- (70 - 72) D+ (67 - 69) D (63 - 66)
D- (60 - 62) F (below 60)

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Because of the nature of this course, class attendance is required and essential. If it is necessary to miss a scheduled class, the student must notify the instructor via voicemail, e-mail, or in person. If the class missed is an exam, make-up will be allowed only if the student contacts the instructor prior to the exam. If allowed, the make-up must be completed within one week. Failure to do so will result in a grade of “0”. More than 3 absences may result in dismissal from the course for "lack of attendance/inability to meet course requirements."  Extenuating circumstances will be considered.

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY

It is expected that you will make use of any resources available to you as become proficient in the course objectives. This includes, but is not limited to, obtaining help from reference materials, other members of the class, and tutoring through the Learning Center. Items you submit for evaluation must represent your own work. It is permissible to obtain help from other persons when completing assignments, but you should make sure that you are able to reproduce any problem that required assistance without any help. Any departure from these guidelines will be considered cheating and dealt with according to the procedure outlined in the student handbook. Possible consequences range from receiving a “0” on the item to receiving a “0” for the course, but all consequences will be determined at the instructor’s discretion.

CELL PHONE/CELL PHONE CALCULATOR POLICY

Cell phones have become very disruptive in the classroom due to inappropriate usage and behavior.  Please turn all cell phones to vibrate or leave them in your vehicles.  If you are "on-call" or are dealing with an emergency, please exit the room and take the call in the hallway.

Additionally, cell phones will not be adequate calculators for this course.  Please do not plan to use them as such.  a simple scientific calculator can be purchased at most stores for less than $20.  Do not invest the $150 in a graphing calculator, as it will not be of any more assistance to you than a regular calculator.

TESTING POLICY

During exams, it is expected that students will do their own work. Receiving assistance from other sources, including textbooks, websites, and other people, is not acceptable. Use of technology other than a scientific calculator is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Any deviation from this policy may result in an automatic “0” for the exam under the academic honesty policy.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Students requiring academic accommodations to be successful in this course are encouraged to arrange a meeting with the Continuing Education Office at 859-1102. At that meeting, strategies for success will be discussed, as well as any accommodations required for the classroom, which will then be communicated with the instructor.
